SST Anomalies -- 23 DEC 97 Super Typhoon PAKA crossed the tropical Pacific during the past 2 weeks making a direct hit on Guam last week -- 17 Dec 97. From the SST anomaly chart of 23 Dec, the upwelled "wake" is clearly evident. PAKA developed along the NWestern periphery of the large ENSO warm water anomaly -- just southwest of Hawaii [7N/166W], where SSTs had been several degrees above normal [extra fuel?]. The coolest upwelled "scars" appear in the vicinities of the Marshall Islands, where it intensified rapidly, and Guam, where reported winds were at or in excess of 140 knots.
