We recognize that it is not always easy for coral reef managers and scientists to check out our website for updated information twice each week. Even if they are familiar with the Coral Reef Watch satellite data on coral bleaching, they may not think to check our website regularly for the local conditions in their area. So, we designed an automated system of free e-mail alerts to warn people when the thermal stress rises to dangerous levels. The alerts are focused on a limited set of Virtual Station sites around the world. Coral reef managers, scientists, or anyone else can receive free automated e-mails to alert you to conditions close to the reefs that you care about. Or you can sign up for global alerts for all of the available sites, so you can keep in touch with coral bleaching stress around the world. This is what a Satellite Bleaching Alert e-mail looks like:
The e-mail gives the current conditions at the reef site, a short history of previous alerts at that location, and links to more information on the Coral Reef Watch website. The alert levels are based on the current HotSpot and DHW for the site:
To sign up for your own free Satellite Bleaching Alert e-mails, visit our website at: coralreefwatch-satops.noaa.gov/SBA.html. Try our hands-on SBA exercises to learn more about this product.
