Science and Technology Arrangement between Australians and NOAA
The Australians signed a historic Science and Technology Arrangement with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
(NOAA) in June 2001, the first between our two governments, to
collaborate on coral reef research. This new agreement is an
"Arrangement between the
Australian Institute Of Marine Science
and the
Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority
both of The Commonwealth of Australia and the National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Administration of the United States of America
regarding Scientific and Technical Cooperation in the Area of Coral
Reefs." The purpose of this Arrangement is to jointly pursue
scientific and technical cooperation in the area of coral reef
research, monitoring, and protection that further the mutual
interests of the parties involved. Although initially developed
with the National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information
Service and the Office of Oceanin and Atmospheric Research taking
the lead, it is expected that other NOAA Line Offices and
Australian parties will elect to take advantage of this new
mechanism designed to gain further insights into coral reefs
processes and monitoring.
